5 Eco Friendly Strategies for Beginners

Why people fail at going zero waste

Going eco friendly seems easy enough, right? Although it is simple, it is not easy. The difficulty of buying 100% eco friendly and package free food is probably the greatest challenge… when not shopping in the right places.

This blog post will not only give a solution to the great grocery challenge, but will also give ideas on how to reduce waste in other areas the average person produces.

How you can succeed in an eco friendly lifestyle

When the zero waste lifestyle gets difficult, it helps to remember what inspired the change to go waste free. The earth is suffering from humans decisions, and all of us are responsible.

What have humans done to cause global warming, plastic pollution, and the mass killing of marine life you ask? Nasa stated that “on Earth, human activities are changing the natural greenhouse. Over the last century the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2).” Click to find out why climate change is killing humans and how to help climate change. Humans have collectively sent 18 billion pounds of plastic into the ocean. National Geographic said that “all that plastic is causing harm to the creatures that live in the ocean, from coral reefs smothered in bags, to turtles gagging on straws, to whales and seabirds that starve because their bellies are so jammed with bits of plastic that there’s no room for real food.”

Learn how to reduce waste now with the following seven simple steps.

Cut daily waste in half with these 5 actionable steps

1. Shop local markets for produce

The biggest challenge in reducing waste, is grocery shopping. Going to a local grocery store and looking for good food that does not come in plastic packaging can seem nearly impossible. However, there is a solution. When shopping for produce, go to a local market; be sure to buy locally grown produce!

2. Bulk food stores are your friend

For most food, shopping at a market is not an option. It will either have packaging on it or will not be friendly on budgets. Don’t worry, there is a simple solution. Start shopping at whole foods or similar stores. These stores sell bulk food with no packaging at fair prices. The idea is to bring containers from home, fill them up with food, and avoid packaging waste.

3. Support local bakeries

The majority of the time, grocery stores sell dough based products (like bread) in plastic packaging. Bulk stores such as Bulk Barn (only in Canada) do not carry bread. So why not support a local bakery and get fresh dough based products? Be sure to bring a cloth reusable bag to use when purchasing!

4. Use a reusable shopping bag

Most stores offer a plastic bag to carry products out of the store after purchasing. Plastic bags are terrible for the environment, and marine life.

It takes up to 1000 years for plastic bags to fully decompose. When in the ocean, turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish (one of their favourite snacks), and consume the plastic. Only use reusable shopping bags and feel good about keeping turtles alive.

5. Reusable drink bottles

Plastic pollution is a war. We need to do as much as possible to stop this. A huge contributor to plastic pollution is plastic disposable water bottles. By purchasing a reusable drink bottle and using that to drink from, plastic waste will be cut down significantly.
