How to store ginger without plastic
"Proper" food storage tips often call for plastic. When I was shredding ginger for my Moscow Mule, I asked google how to properly store ginger. To my surprise, the top method suggested a plastic bag. That's when I decided I would find the best ways on how to store ginger without plastic. Here's what I found.
So how do you store ginger without plastic? To store ginger without plastic, keep the ginger root uncut, and with the skin on. Place the whole ginger root into a reusable silicone freezer bag, remove the air, and place it in the crisper drawer of the fridge. If part of the ginger has been peeled or cut off, dry it with a cloth before storing.

If you use the same method and place it in the freezer, it will last up to 3 months. One of the methods I listed on how to store ginger without plastic was on the countertop at room temperature. This is a great way to store ginger if you know you'll use it within a week. Here's how you can store fresh ginger without refrigeration.
- Keep ginger root uncut with the skin on. If it's cut, blot dry with a cloth
- Place ginger root on a plate on countertop
- Will last up to a week, after that the skin will start to shrivel and the root will soften. At this point, place into a reusable silicone freezer bag, remove the air, then put into the fridge.

My favourite way to store ginger is to place it in a reusable freezer bag, removing the air, then placing it in the crisper drawer of the fridge. The trick to this method is having the right reusable freezer bag!
